J'can Challenges

Strange happenin's in JA, from what I'm readin', Bloggers. Doc and Scratchie report some perplexin' situations re crime & police. Two men missin', and Commissioner Forbes is out. I've always believed Trevor McMillan was de better choice for de post ov commissioner. No, Piggy's not political--but Mr. McMillan just had a credible, no-nonsense way to him. He spoke frankly, which encouraged transparency. Ah don't know Mr. Forbes at all--who does, really, after so many years in office? Scratchie mentioned Forbes' sudden show ov transparency: publishin' officers' privacy, like de people dem age can solve crime. Politics corrupt. Some police corrupt, some not.
Almost eighteen years ago, ah went to visit mi grandfather at Andrew's Memorial before he succumbed to his illnesses. De hospital felt claustrophobic, so ah left, and wandered about for a bit, tryin' to accept that Grampy was really on his way out. Ah didn't realize how shaken ah was, until a policeman pulled up beside me on his bike and asked, "Yu okay?" He looked at mi like he was tryin' to place mi age--ah was long an' cranky--but up close, he could see that ah was little more than a child. He escorted mi back to de hospital. Visitin' hours were now up, and mi uncle had driven off a few minutes earlier, believin' I'd left wif Auntie. (Them time deh, telephone an' telegram nevva even start wine together fe conceive cell phone, soh there was no way to call him back right away.) No problem. Ah was wearin' jeans--modestly bike-friendly gear--and ah had mi first and only bike ride! De policeman safely took mi home, told mi to stay sweet, and said, "Noh worry, dear heart, God a look-out fe Grampy." Ah never forgot that. De bad cops who draw down 'pon people an' try hustle money don't sway mi opinion. That one policeman will always be mi strongest impression ov de JA Constabulary Force. I'm prayin' for de force in JA, 'cause believe me, Bloggers, there are some good cops out there. Hope yu have a great day!

thats a nice story
cant say i've had the best of relationships with policemen though. I just find the tendency for abuse of power to be very strong with them.

Ah know what yu mean, Jdid, but that one good incident made a strong impression on mi at a young age.
BTW, pleasant surprise that yu posted today. He posted today, folks, there's a new post at Jdid's !

Hi Melody,
I have encountered a few good ones as well so I won't group them into one basket at all. I have also met a few crufts but that too doesn't allow me to group them. Their job is ruff and I commend the ones that do their jobs in spite of the circumstances that face them.
Melody pon bike back?! Hmmm some people turn bumpa heh heh heh.

Hi Melody-I would like to think that there are good cops out there in the majority. We need to increase their salaries, not that that will stop corruption but they may think twice before crossing that line. Man, it rough to be a policeman in Jamaica.

Tough life for policemen and women especially when you observe the types of weapons the public has.Plenty good policemen outthere but the bad ones wil lalways give the whole Force a bad name. Here, far too many people die in police custody and nothing ever comes of it.

Eeh, Scratchie! "Is a beautiful sight, I man love to watch, watch De Piggy she, deh pon de bike back! Bike Back! Watch De Piggy deh pon de bike back! Bike Back . . ." Hope yu memba de song. (lol)
Sunshine, it rough fe true, but as Doc said, foreign cops arrivin'. (Yu can imagine de heartburn when our poor police inna tear-up uniform start to work side & side 'mongst de well-paid foreigners.)
Kami, some cops only know one way to subdue people--brutality, but ah guess wi get what wi pay for: bare-bones wages for bare-bones law enforcement.

Hi Mel....haven't been very neighbourly about the visits this year...sorry.

True, not all of our Police are bad eggs...like how you have a few unscrupulous medics as well. I have a number of Policemen as patients and I would like to think them good ones. Keep up the prayers we need it. Chupsie! Dr. D.
